Is Karate Chinese or Japanese?

Is Karate Ofensive or Defnsive?

Karate may be defined as a weaponless means of self defense. It consists of dynamic offensive and defensive techniques using all parts of the body to their maximum advantage.

Is Karate good for a girl?

Karate won't stop you from being assaulted but it can certainly help change the expected outcome of the assault. When a woman learns Karate, she also learns self-defense, self-confidence and self-esteem which allows her to be able to go out in life with less fear.

Where is the Club?

The club is situated at the Lake Windemere Primary School, 17 Uraidla Avenue, Salisbury North.

How much does it cost?

We first start with a Beginners course, this goes for 4 sessions (Tuesday nights) and costs $50 for the course, you will start at 7.30 and finish about 8.10. Once you have finished the course then you will train until 9.00

What do I wear?

Initially just wear loose fitting clothing, no tight jeans or dresses. If you have a white karate uniform you can wear that also. But please remove any logos that you may have on it. And please leave jewellery at home.

Is the organisation recognised?

We are part of the Seishikan group, which is a Japanese based organisation. We are members of the WKF (World Karate Federation) The JKF (Japanese Karate Federation) and the AKF (Australian Karate Federation)the only Government recognised Karate Association in Australia. Each of the club’s (Dojo) instructors (Sensei) have many years of experience. Some started way back in the late 60s. We are also well represented in tournaments with some people who have ranked highly around Australia and around the world.

What ages can train?

Must be at least 8 years old, and any age above that. Because we are serious about the training it isn’t suitable for really young children

How fit do I have to be?

If you don't think you are fit, that shouldn't be a problem, as fitness will increase as you train. If you have any medical issues it may be a good idea to see your doctor and speak to your instructor. We can generally accommodate people with various medical issues, and these can be generally worked around.

How long does it take to get a Black Belt?

It pretty much depends on how often and how hard you train. It can take between 3 and 4 years on average. Obviously if you don't put in the work it will take longer. The best advice I can give you is "turn up and train hard".

Who does the Gradings?

The Gradings are done by Shihan Phil Bates. As we have clubs around the country it isn't possible for him to go to every club for every grading. And each club will have a panel of senior instructors under the auspices of Shihan to conduct the gradings.
